Ireon: seaside life and ancient history
Ireon is one of the best-known places in Samos. According to Greek mythology, the goddess Hera was born and worshipped here, a history still visible in the ruins of the sanctuary and its celebrated ancient temple.
The seaside village is about 8 km from Pythagorion. Traditional island architecture, a peaceful waterfront and a long history give Ireon a nostalgic atmosphere that welcomes every visitor.
Herodotus described the Temple of Hera as one of the greatest temples of Greece. The monumental Ionic structure is associated with the era of Polycrates, while the sanctuary and the Ancient Sacred Way have yielded important finds now displayed in the island’s archaeological museum.
Alongside its monuments, Ireon is loved for its beach and easy-going village life—an ideal base for travellers who want both culture and the sea.
